Sales Tax Updates – What You Need to Know
Hi Busy Beaver friends, we’ve got an important update about sales tax. Due to changes in state laws (and us hitting some big milestones in certain states), we are now required to collect sales tax on certain purchases.
We know taxes aren’t the most exciting topic, but we want to keep things clear and easy to understand. Below is a breakdown of what’s changing, which states are affected, and what to do if you’re tax-exempt.
Why Is This Happening?
In 2018, the Supreme Court ruled in South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc. that states can require businesses to collect sales tax based on sales volume in that state, even if the business doesn’t have a physical location there.
Since then, most states have adopted their own economic nexus laws. This means that if a business reaches a certain sales or transaction threshold in a state, it is required to collect sales tax on purchases made there.
Which States Are Affected?
Each state has different sales tax requirements, but here’s what you should know:
- Economic Nexus Thresholds: If we reach the required sales threshold in your state, we must begin collecting sales tax.
- State-Specific Tax Rules: Tax rates and regulations vary by state, so the amount you see at checkout may differ depending on your location.
If your state requires sales tax collection, you’ll start seeing these charges applied to your orders.
What This Means for You
- If your state is affected, sales tax will now appear at checkout. Our system automatically calculates the correct rate based on your location, so no extra steps are needed on your end.
- Tax-Exempt Businesses & Organizations: If you are tax-exempt, please email orders@busybeaver.net with your Sales Tax Exemption Certificate, and we’ll update your account accordingly.
